{"id":114,"date":"2016-10-10T00:46:14","date_gmt":"2016-10-10T00:46:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.genealogyatheart.com\/?p=114"},"modified":"2016-10-10T00:46:14","modified_gmt":"2016-10-10T00:46:14","slug":"flag-day-the-most-under-celebrated-u-s-holiday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.genealogyatheart.com\/?p=114","title":{"rendered":"Flag Day -The Most Under Celebrated U.S. Holiday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Originally published on genealogyatheart.blogspot.com on 14 Jun 2015<\/p>\n<p>My immigrant grandparents, John and Mary Koss, are the only people I have ever known that celebrated Flag Day. \u00a0As a child, I remember my Gramps assembling the flag kit and proudly placing it in our front yard, which faced Route 6 in Gary, Indiana, on every patriotic holiday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"separator\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-uoN4eEWiJyA\/VXR3Y0RQLtI\/AAAAAAAAAHM\/xx245h4-kMU\/s1600\/Flag.jpg\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-uoN4eEWiJyA\/VXR3Y0RQLtI\/AAAAAAAAAHM\/xx245h4-kMU\/s320\/Flag.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"213\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The pic above is taken from an old 35mm film that my husband had converted to DVD. \u00a0I&#8217;m on the left in my tennis outfit. \u00a0I never did learn to play tennis well but I definitely kept the custom of celebrating Flag Day.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;d cook hotdogs on a small portable grill, accompanied by my grandmother&#8217;s Croatian style potato salad (which is sort of like German potato salad using oil and vinegar instead of a mayonnaise base but it&#8217;s served hot). \u00a0 My mom would bake a cake, frost it with white icing and decorate with blueberries and strawberries for the stripes and banana slices dipped in lemon for the stars.<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t decide why Flag Day is so under celebrated. \u00a0Maybe it&#8217;s because it falls right after school has ended and people are on vacation. \u00a0Or maybe because it&#8217;s sandwiched in between Memorial Day and Independence Day. \u00a0Perhaps it&#8217;s because Father&#8217;s Day is right around the corner. \u00a0My best guess is because Flag Day is not an official federal holiday. \u00a0Although Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Flag Day in 1916, Congress didn&#8217;t approve it until 1949. Seriously, it took 33 years to approve this holiday.<\/p>\n<p>I am going to continue to celebrate the day and our symbol of freedom.
