{"id":120,"date":"2016-10-10T02:51:36","date_gmt":"2016-10-10T02:51:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.genealogyatheart.com\/?p=120"},"modified":"2016-10-10T02:51:36","modified_gmt":"2016-10-10T02:51:36","slug":"planes-trains-automobiles-barges-oh-myplanes-trains-automobiles-barges-oh-my","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.genealogyatheart.com\/?p=120","title":{"rendered":"Planes, Trains, Automobiles &#038; Barges, Oh My!Planes, Trains, Automobiles &#038; Barges, Oh My!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Originally published on genealogyatheart.blogspot.com on 26 Jun 2015.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">As you read this I am somewhere along I-77 on my 2<\/span><sup style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">nd<\/sup><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-family: arial, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">driving trip from West Virginia to Florida in the past 2 weeks.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-family: arial, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The 18 hours, nearly 1000 miles, distance is my last planned journey between these destinations and I can\u2019t express how grateful I am to be through with this move.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">My 3x great grandfather, Jean &#8220;John&#8221; Leininger, from Endenhoffr, Mietesheim, West Bas Rhin, Alsace, France (but sometimes Germany!) emigrated with his family in 1827 on the Canaris, a ship leaving Le Havre, France with an arrival in New York City on 30 Jun 1827. &#8220;According to an old note, they went &#8216;by rail&#8217; to Buffalo, New York. \u00a0From there they went by canal to Canton, or Stark Co., Ohio.&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333; font-family: 'helvetica neue', arial, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"background-color: #fafaf7; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.33px;\">1<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-blogger-escaped-style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;\">\n<div data-blogger-escaped-style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The family&#8217;s choice of transportation was the quickest for the time period. Since the rails ended in Buffalo, canal travel was faster than overland by horse and wagon. \u00a0I think about my great grandmother, Marie Margueritte, with two small children on this journey. \u00a0No airport playrooms, electronic games, readily available food or bathroom facilities. \u00a0Makes me rethink complaining about the traffic slow down around Charlotte on my journey!<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-blogger-escaped-style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">My husband\u2019s 2x great grandmother, Drusilla Williams DeWolf Thompson\u00a0relocated to Chicago from Troy, New York in the 1850\u2019s.\u00a0<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>We\u2019ve never been able to identify the exact year she moved.\u00a0<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>We know her son, John Calvin DeWolf. was born in Albany, New York in May 1851. First husband, Calvin DeWolf, died of consumption in May 1852 but there is not agreement on whether Calvin died in New York (from the family Bible written years after his death) or in Rock Island, Illinois (Illinois death information found online).\u00a0 Grandma\u00a0Dru (my nickname for her) remarried widower Thomas Coke Thompson in Chicago (per family Bible record) in 1857 so we know that Dru relocated to Illinois within a 5 year time period.\u00a0<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>How did she get there?\u00a0<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Family legend says it was by covered wagon but I find no proof of that.\u00a0<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>It is more likely that Dru traveled via the then modern convenience of railways.\u00a0<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>By 1854, Orphan Trains were shipping children from New York to the Midwest as train travel became more commonplace.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.55px;\">2<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-family: arial, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><sup>\u00a0<\/sup><\/span><sup style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-family: arial, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0In 1850, Chicago was a city of 30,000 served by one rail line, the Galena &amp; Chicago Union Railroad.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-family: arial, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">By 1852, Chicago had 5 rail lines and by 1856, 10.<\/span><sup style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">3<\/sup><span style=\"font-family: arial, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-family: arial, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The 1855 population in Chicago rose to 83500.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-family: arial, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><sup>\u00a0<\/sup><\/span><sup style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">4<\/sup><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-blogger-escaped-style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.5pt;\">In 1854, the cost of the fare from New York to Chicago was $26.00.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.33px;\">7<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.5pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0In today&#8217;s dollars, the cost would be about $628.57!\u00a0 The trip took about 42 hours, as the time from New York to St. Louis was 48 hours.<\/span><sup style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">8\u00a0<\/sup><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-family: arial, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;
