{"id":155,"date":"2016-10-10T03:42:11","date_gmt":"2016-10-10T03:42:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.genealogyatheart.com\/?p=155"},"modified":"2016-10-10T03:42:11","modified_gmt":"2016-10-10T03:42:11","slug":"family-pets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.genealogyatheart.com\/?p=155","title":{"rendered":"Family Pets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Originally published on genealogyatheart.blogspot.com on 7 Aug 2015.<\/p>\n<p>My daughter wants to get a dog in the next few months. \u00a0Growing up, our kids have had lots of pets as my husband and I believe that the benefits far outweigh the work. \u00a0Gaining responsibility and compassion, instilling nurture and playful fun are worth the cost and effort, IMHO.<\/p>\n<table class=\"tr-caption-container\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" align=\"center\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td data-blogger-escaped-style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-kVEO1w09rFY\/Vb_tWVIENvI\/AAAAAAAAAX0\/OgUZSzW2Mkw\/s1600\/Jon%2B%2526%2BHeath%2Bpets.jpg\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-kVEO1w09rFY\/Vb_tWVIENvI\/AAAAAAAAAX0\/OgUZSzW2Mkw\/s1600\/Jon%2B%2526%2BHeath%2Bpets.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"tr-caption\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"text-align: center;\">Lab Mariah, Son holding cat Tinker and daughter holding rabbit Fluffy. \u00a0They also had a parakeet, fish and turtles.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Daughter will most likely find an older mutt at the local shelter. \u00a0Son thought she ought to get a cat, instead, since she likes to travel. \u00a0Hubby is just excited to finally be a &#8220;grandparent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve been having a large amount of rain lately that limits outside activity so I decided last weekend to look through photo albums of our family&#8217;s pets. \u00a0I was amazed to discover how far back the interaction of animals in my ancestors&#8217; lives are recorded.<\/p>\n<p>The oldest seems to be this pic of my mom and aunt from around 1923:<\/p>\n<p class=\"separator\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-79ckaK1KUdE\/Vb_fc0LV17I\/AAAAAAAAAWI\/yQj2mzq-mAM\/s1600\/Mom.jpg\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-79ckaK1KUdE\/Vb_fc0LV17I\/AAAAAAAAAWI\/yQj2mzq-mAM\/s200\/Mom.jpg\" width=\"132\" height=\"200\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I wish I knew the pony&#8217;s name! \u00a0Living on a farm, we had 12 ponies and a horse but my favorite was Dapple Brownie &#8211; I&#8217;m about the same age as my mom on her pony:<\/p>\n<p class=\"separator\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-YV3V_FZVxTI\/Vb_kiXQPMoI\/AAAAAAAAAWc\/4MfZMwEcCDM\/s1600\/1.jpg\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-YV3V_FZVxTI\/Vb_kiXQPMoI\/AAAAAAAAAWc\/4MfZMwEcCDM\/s1600\/1.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The oldest dog photo we have is of my husband&#8217;s grandmother, Elsie Johnson Harbaugh, from around 1942. The dog&#8217;s name has also been lost to history:<\/p>\n<p class=\"separator\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-Pt0dGGDABfQ\/Vb_lvkwVoAI\/AAAAAAAAAWk\/Oe9dI6uTClw\/s1600\/Elsie%2BDog.jpg\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-Pt0dGGDABfQ\/Vb_lvkwVoAI\/AAAAAAAAAWk\/Oe9dI6uTClw\/s320\/Elsie%2BDog.jpg\" width=\"254\" height=\"320\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Funny how families tend to like similar breeds. \u00a0Hubby&#8217;s family really liked small dogs; his<\/p>\n<p>parents also had a poodle named Schatze when he was growing up and after he left home, Nano:<\/p>\n<p class=\"separator\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-wrJRS8Hp10I\/Vb_nfQd7jII\/AAAAAAAAAWw\/-kEw-zbLB00\/s1600\/Nano.jpg\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-wrJRS8Hp10I\/Vb_nfQd7jII\/AAAAAAAAAWw\/-kEw-zbLB00\/s1600\/Nano.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hubby liked larger dogs but his parents drew the line and only allowed him to have a mid size mutt, Henry:<\/p>\n<p class=\"separator\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-AirMwuiGLHk\/Vb_rYwtRlNI\/AAAAAAAAAXg\/Cj4vY73dBX4\/s1600\/toto.jpg\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-AirMwuiGLHk\/Vb_rYwtRlNI\/AAAAAAAAAXg\/Cj4vY73dBX4\/s1600\/toto.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After his death, I cared for Toto&#8217;s sister, Snowball, until we moved to Florida and Snowball retired to a farm in Indiana. \u00a0I also took care of my uncle&#8217;s weimaraner, Lucky, for a bit. \u00a0Someone stole him from my uncle&#8217;s backyard and it broke my uncle&#8217;s heart:<\/p>\n<p class=\"separator\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-eVpodiTM9_s\/Vb_sgujgJJI\/AAAAAAAAAXs\/SfFTyHHcdBg\/s1600\/Lucky.jpg\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-eVpodiTM9_s\/Vb_sgujgJJI\/AAAAAAAAAXs\/SfFTyHHcdBg\/s1600\/Lucky.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our next door neighbor, Mr. Bauer, had a small dog I played with, too:<\/p>\n<p class=\"separator\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-x_-75QDYelY\/Vb_zBT_CGXI\/AAAAAAAAAYo\/MFDsfSi9VyQ\/s1600\/Jamies%2Bcat.jpg\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-x_-75QDYelY\/Vb_zBT_CGXI\/AAAAAAAAAYo\/MFDsfSi9VyQ\/s320\/Jamies%2Bcat.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"237\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kiitie looks so innocent here but it scratched anyone who came near. \u00a0When hubby and I were first on our own we got a cat, Midnight, at the pound:<\/p>\n<p class=\"separator\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-B-z8Y8KTqkg\/Vb_zS3K6YVI\/AAAAAAAAAYw\/oGwvJY1rQK8\/s1600\/Midnight.jpg\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-B-z8Y8KTqkg\/Vb_zS3K6YVI\/AAAAAAAAAYw\/oGwvJY1rQK8\/s320\/Midnight.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"139\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mid got into a cat fight when he was about 8 years old and died from an infection. \u00a0We were so upset that it took us a year before we could get another pet. \u00a0Eventually we got Tinker (the cat) and Misty (the dog).<\/p>\n<p class=\"separator\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-5hzC-XLq9YY\/Vb_0Gk52o1I\/AAAAAAAAAY8\/_Vceross73U\/s1600\/Misty%2Band%2BTink.jpg\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-5hzC-XLq9YY\/Vb_0Gk52o1I\/AAAAAAAAAY8\/_Vceross73U\/s200\/Misty%2Band%2BTink.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"189\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"separator\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">who were the best of friends as we got them within 2 weeks of each other. \u00a0Tinker lived 19 plus years and Misty, 12. \u00a0These were the first pets our kids had.<\/p>\n<p class=\"separator\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">Over the years we also adopted a stray, Cipher, who turned out wasn&#8217;t a stray. \u00a0When we couldn&#8217;t find the owner we took Cipher to the vet &#8211; no chip so we got him shots and adopted him. \u00a0Cipher slept at our house at night and we later learned was spending his days a few blocks away at a neighbor&#8217;s house. When the neighbor decided to get Cipher chipped (she was calling him Ben) she discovered we were his people. \u00a0Cipher decided to move in with her permanently after I brought home two kittens who had been abandoned at the school where I worked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"separator\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">Last but not least are 2 birds that I will never forget. \u00a0The first is a wild bird that wasn&#8217;t very wild. Every time I went out to play the bird below would join me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"separator\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-FAglSQ9YJXU\/Vb_1C4OGwNI\/AAAAAAAAAZE\/OPQ09QK7BVI\/s1600\/Lori%2BBluebird.jpg\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-FAglSQ9YJXU\/Vb_1C4OGwNI\/AAAAAAAAAZE\/OPQ09QK7BVI\/s1600\/Lori%2BBluebird.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"separator\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">This went on for at least 3 years and as an adult, I realize how strange that is but as a child, I didn&#8217;t know that wild birds aren&#8217;t supposed to play with you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"separator\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">When I was three, an elderly neighbor was moving and couldn&#8217;t take her parakeet with her so my mother said we&#8217;d look after the bird. \u00a0The neighbor had had Chipper for about 20 years so my mom figured it wouldn&#8217;t live much longer. \u00a0Surprise, surprise, Chipper happily chirped for the next 13 years. \u00a0He didn&#8217;t like to leave his cage; he&#8217;d fly from one end of the room to the other and than land on the open door and go back inside. \u00a0Chipper&#8217;s favorite show was same as that of my grandparents, Lawrence Welk, and later, The FBI. \u00a0I don&#8217;t know why he liked the latter but he would sing so loudly you couldn&#8217;t hear the show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"separator\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-zZPTJoasXjI\/Vb_1Y-_FBHI\/AAAAAAAAAZM\/S75KUtdSXoA\/s1600\/Chipper.jpg\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-zZPTJoasXjI\/Vb_1Y-_FBHI\/AAAAAAAAAZM\/S75KUtdSXoA\/s200\/Chipper.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"186\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"separator\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">I can&#8217;t wait to see how our two cats, Charlie and Parker, are going to behave when daughter&#8217;s dog visits.
