{"id":250,"date":"2016-10-10T05:00:11","date_gmt":"2016-10-10T05:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.genealogyatheart.com\/?p=250"},"modified":"2016-10-10T05:00:11","modified_gmt":"2016-10-10T05:00:11","slug":"tree-error-in-ancestry-an-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.genealogyatheart.com\/?p=250","title":{"rendered":"Tree Error in Ancestry &#8211; An Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Originally published on genealogyatheart.blogspot.com on 9 Jan 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an update on my blog,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogger.com\/blogger.g?blogID=3114411359463302999#editor\/target=post;postID=5376756530865615582;onPublishedMenu=posts;onClosedMenu=posts;postNum=2;src=postname\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"border: 0px; color: #1155cc; cursor: pointer; display: inline-block; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; max-width: 100%; overflow: hidden; padding: 0px; text-overflow: ellipsis; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: nowrap; width: auto;\">Faulty Family Trees &#8211; Erasing a Deadly Mistake<\/a>,\u00a0from 7 January regarding one of my co-worker\u2019s mother being reported dead on Ancestry when she\u2019s very much alive.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 2 family tree\u2019s that gave her a death date, therefore making her birth date and place visible, along with her marriage date and place, I received an email message from one tree owner who did delete the death date.\u00a0 Unfortunately, although I had asked him to, the tree owner didn\u2019t make the individual private so some of her info is still showing:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-gLZKZf7qFOY\/VpFwDwL-N0I\/AAAAAAAAAug\/kt4qXYUYNmg\/s1600\/a.png\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-gLZKZf7qFOY\/VpFwDwL-N0I\/AAAAAAAAAug\/kt4qXYUYNmg\/s1600\/a.png\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I cut off the rest of info, above, as I don\u2019t want to publicize the year and place which are still visible. \u00a0 I emailed him again to ask that he make the individual private but he didn\u2019t respond.<\/p>\n<p>The other tree owner never responded so all information is still displayed.<\/p>\n<p>The other problem is if you do a search of the individual\u2019s name under Family Trees this shows up as public:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-3K7GRaOcIcY\/VpFwTffy4ZI\/AAAAAAAAAuo\/g2C3huA7uMg\/s1600\/b.png\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-3K7GRaOcIcY\/VpFwTffy4ZI\/AAAAAAAAAuo\/g2C3huA7uMg\/s1600\/b.png\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-sNBL7G-gDIQ\/VpFwbxwxzlI\/AAAAAAAAAuw\/38jnnA2yT-M\/s1600\/c.png\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-sNBL7G-gDIQ\/VpFwbxwxzlI\/AAAAAAAAAuw\/38jnnA2yT-M\/s1600\/c.png\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even though one of the tree owners removed the wrong death date it is still visible in the search.<\/p>\n<p>Since 3 days have passed, no telling when the other tree owner is going to respond AND Ancestry.com needs to update their search results, so I called Ancestry.<\/p>\n<p>They were experiencing heavy call volume so I waited about 5 minutes. \u00a0Spoke with Carnel who said &#8220;due to privacy, we can&#8217;t do anything.&#8221; \u00a0He acknowledged that &#8220;this happens all the time.&#8221; \u00a0Ancestry will update an error in an index but won&#8217;t touch a family tree.<\/p>\n<p>I read Carnel Ancestry&#8217;s privacy policy: &#8221;\u00a0We recognize that the information about living family members can be sensitive so we have safeguards to hide living individuals within family trees, the AncestryDNA experience, and other areas of the site.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Carnel couldn&#8217;t explain to me what safeguards Ancestry has put into place to protect the living when they are marked as dead. \u00a0I understand why he couldn&#8217;t because they have none.<\/p>\n<p>I then asked what happens if the individuals we&#8217;re trying to contact never respond to the email we sent or don&#8217;t renew membership. \u00a0Carnel said they still maintain registered guest status so they can always add and edit their trees. \u00a0That means, if they ever read their email and follow the directions, they can correct the wrong information.<\/p>\n<p>Carnel told me that I could contact customersolutions@ancestry.com &#8211; email only, can&#8217;t talk to a real person! and they will email the individuals. \u00a0What a brilliant idea (note sarcasm). \u00a0We&#8217;ve already done that twice. \u00a0Although Ancestry has phone numbers for these people, they don&#8217;t call them. \u00a0Heaven knows, Ancestry will protect the PRIVACY of the living who make errors but not of the living who are trying to preserve their own PRIVACY.<\/p>\n<p>Also was told that Ancestry does update all of their records but there is no time frame for that (could explain why I have so many ghost leaves). \u00a0Eventually, Ancestry will get around to doing that so when someone is searching this individual&#8217;s name in a family tree the corrected tree won&#8217;t display the death date that is still showing.<\/p>\n<p>Will let you know how this plays out&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Originally published on genealogyatheart.blogspot.com on 9 Jan 2016.
