{"id":88,"date":"2016-10-09T17:37:52","date_gmt":"2016-10-09T17:37:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.genealogyatheart.com\/?p=88"},"modified":"2016-10-09T17:37:52","modified_gmt":"2016-10-09T17:37:52","slug":"specials-to-share","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.genealogyatheart.com\/?p=88","title":{"rendered":"Specials to Share!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Originally published on genealogyatheart.blogspot.com 29 Apr 2015.<\/p>\n<p>I had planned to write about my decision to obtain Certified Genealogist status but this week I discovered 3 special offers so I\u2019ve revised my plan to let you know what I found.<\/p>\n<p>DEAL #1<\/p>\n<p>If you aren\u2019t a Legacy member, you may not know that you can take advantage of their webinars; some cost, some are permanently free and others free for just a limited time.<\/p>\n<p>For a list of their archived webinars visit:<a href=\"http:\/\/www.familytreewebinars.com\/archived_webinars.php\">http:\/\/www.familytreewebinars.com\/archived_webinars.php<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not a member of Legacy so I only watch the free ones.\u00a0 I first learned about the webinars when I signed up for their weekly email newsletter after I purchased Legacy software last Christmas as a present to myself.\u00a0 I ended up with Legacy because I was so frustrated with Family Tree Maker (FTM).\u00a0 My extremely large public \u201cMain Tree\u201d on Ancestry.com stopped synching with my desktop FTM last May.\u00a0 I called FTM customer service and they blamed Ancestry.\u00a0 Called Ancestry and they blamed FTM.\u00a0 This went on for several weeks.\u00a0 I did what everyone does when you call a call center and can&#8217;t get help &#8211;\u00a0hang up, wait a few minutes and call again with the hope you&#8217;ll get someone more knowledgeable.\u00a0 Unfortunately, that didn&#8217;t work, either.\u00a0 FTM reps did sent me a useless email with instructions several times\u00a0but it didn&#8217;t fix the problem.\u00a0\u00a0Next I posted on the Ancestry Message Boards asking for\u00a0advice.\u00a0 Surprise, surprise, discovered from the Message Board that I wasn\u2019t alone with the problem so I began to explore other family tree software options.\u00a0 Looking at them seriously made me start pining for my old PAF from Family Search!\u00a0 Since that\u2019s no longer available, for a temporary fix, I downloaded Legacy\u2019s free family tree standard software<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legacyfamilytree.com\/DownloadLegacy.asp#Download\">https:\/\/www.legacyfamilytree.com\/DownloadLegacy.asp#Download<\/a><\/p>\n<p>and was happy that it could quickly\u00a0save my Ancestry tree.\u00a0 I liked that it also gave me an error report.\u00a0 I just wanted a product that would serve as a backup on my desktop in case I couldn\u2019t sign on to Ancestry but the more I used Legacy, the more I liked it so I decided to buy the latest version.\u00a0 I haven\u2019t really explored all of its features yet which is on my to-do list.\u00a0 I am trying to download my Ancestry tree monthly and save it to Legacy.\u00a0 After a weekend thumb drive disaster, it\u2019s something I really will make time to do on the first of every month (Famous Last Words!) but that\u2019s another story\u2026<\/p>\n<p>On Monday I listened to the passionate webinar presentation by Bernice Alexander Bennett regarding her volunteer work at the National Archives and took the challenge she mentioned.\u00a0 No spoilers here \u2013 this is a must listen to training offered through May 1<sup>st! <\/sup>on Legacy so sign on for the 1 hour class \u201cUnited States Colored Troops Civil War Widow\u2019s Pension Applications:\u00a0 Tell the Story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DEAL #2<\/p>\n<p>The second special offer with a limited time is that Fold3\u2019s Civil War records are FREE for the month of April.\u00a0 If you aren\u2019t a paid member then you\u2019ll really want to check this out by Thursday, April 30<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0at 11:59 PM!\u00a0 You\u2019ll have to register your email at<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fold3.com\/\">http:\/\/www.fold3.com\/\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>but it\u2019s well worth it.\u00a0 I stayed up way too late last night but got all of my \u201cclose\u201d Civil War\u00a0records saved to honor the 150 years since the war ended.\u00a0 This included my great great grandfather Ferdinand Kable (Ohio Infantry Unit 29 Company A), 2 times great uncles Thomas, Prosser, and Mark Duer, (Ohio 99<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Infantry Regiment, Company F), my husband\u2019s great great grandfather Samuel August Samuelson (Indiana Infantry Unit 73), and 2 times great uncle Thomas Charles Thompson (Illinois 1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0Light Artillery Battery).\u00a0 I also saved records for several coworkers whom I\u2019m working on their trees for my Certified Genealogist portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>Then I got totally side tracked and looked up the War of 1812 pension records for my 3<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0great grandmother, Mary Polly Dennis Hodge Adams Elder Search.\u00a0 Yep, GGGGrandma outlived 4 husbands.\u00a0 Her first husband, John Hodge, died in combat and she was left in 1813 with twin boys in the Ohio wilderness. \u00a0And to think I thought childcare was a nightmare when my kids were small; I can\u2019t even imagine what she went through!\u00a0 Her second husband, Edward Adams, whom I\u2019m descended from, died in 1822 leaving GGGGram with 5 kids.\u00a0 She then married Owen Elder and after a 6<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0child, became a widow again in1830.\u00a0 The pension records were under her last husband, William Search\u2019s name. Someday I plan on writing more about the hunt for Mary and her family.<\/p>\n<p>DEAL # 3<\/p>\n<p>Got an email from our friends at geneablogger about an Ancestry.com contest to win a 6 month US Discovery Ancestry membership.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what happens if you win and you\u2019re already an Ancestry member \u2013 I figure I\u2019ll do a pay it forward and give it away or negotiate with them for a discount.
